How The Special Forces Handle Extremely Cold Weather Conditions
The life of a Special Forces soldier requires dealing with things that the average person would never consider. That includes extreme weather conditions, which can range from a searing desert heat to a freezing arctic cold.
So how do these soldiers manage these hostile environments? Let's take a look at some of the strategies and tactics that Special Forces employ to stay safe and effective in any climate.
The Right Gear for the Job
Special Forces soldiers are trained to use specialized gear and equipment suited for whatever climate they're operating in. For instance, when it comes to extreme heat, soldiers are equipped with lightweight uniforms made from moisture-wicking fabrics and moisture-resistant boots. Additionally, they bring plenty of water with them, often doubling up on canteens or carrying hydration packs to ensure they don't become dehydrated.
Conversely, in extremely cold climates, the standard issue equipment changes drastically. Soldiers will be dressed in heavy parkas layered over their uniforms, toped with insulated snow pants and boots designed to keep them warm in even the most frigid temperatures. In addition to being bundled up like an Eskimo, they'll also carry chemical hand warmers as well as thermal blankets if needed.
However, equipment is just the start and is meaningless without preparation, training and conditioning to extreme weather.
Training and Conditioning
Special forces units typically train their bodies to withstand extreme cold through a combination of physical conditioning, clothing selection, and equipment use.
To physically condition their bodies for cold conditions, special forces units may engage in activities such as running in cold weather, swimming in cold water, or conducting physical training in cold environments. These activities can help them acclimate to cold temperatures and build up their tolerance to the cold.
